HISTORY AND MISSION

Wheeling Central Catholic High School has been educating young men and women since 1865. The school has always been a vital part of the East Wheeling downtown area, and remains an integral part of the diocese of Wheeling-Charleston campus which includes the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Diocesan offices, the Chancery, and Wheeling Catholic Elementary school.

Wheeling Central is one of the most respected high schools in the tri-state area – not only for its academic and athletic programs, but for what is certainly its most important contribution – the highly motivated, spiritually grounded, goal-oriented young men and women who are graduated from the school each year.

Central’s overriding mission is “think and act like Christ.”

ACADEMIA

With an exceptional, faith-based academic program for grades 9 – 12, Wheeling Central boasts a 21st Century Learning Environment supported by the latest technology and laboratory facilities. Dedicated teachers, staff, and administrators serve a gifted student body, preparing them for the next step in their academic and career lives.

Wheeling Central offers a rigorous course curriculum that challenges and motivates students. Every student, from a first day freshman to a last day senior, takes a full schedule of classes each year. All students – no exceptions – take semester and final comprehensive examinations. The college placement office helps students with career planning, college admission, and scholarship assistance.

Through an early entrance program with local colleges, Central seniors enroll in college classes for dual credit – high school and college – that transfers to the college or university in which the students will matriculate upon graduation.

SPIRITUALITY

To complement Central’s strong academic curriculum, an extensive campus ministry program and chaplaincy helps students appreciate and better understand their Catholic faith, while also giving them the opportunity to participate in myriad community service projects each year.

Central Catholic’s steadfast goal is to transmit the message and way of life of Jesus Christ from one generation to the next. The goal is reinforced by daily prayer, orthodox and faithful religious education classes, frequent liturgy and penance at St. Joseph Cathedral, an extensive retreat program and regular contact with priests, religious and lay persons who provide a solid and holy example. Although 90% of the student population is Catholic, 10% of the student population represents other Christian denominations.

ATHLETIC PROGRAM

Wheeling Central Maroon Knights are well known throughout the Mountain State for their outstanding athletic achievements. Sports Illustrated has named Wheeling Central Catholic as the finest athletic program in West Virginia. The real trophies of the school, however, are the wonderful students who work, pray, study, serve, participate in diverse activities, and live the Central way of life.
